It is characterized by the appearance of severe pain on the inside of the knee, which produces a limp when walking and usually last for months without giving up with rest and anti-inflammatories, but the infiltration can be very effective.

The knee is surrounded by powerful tendons, between tendons and bone there is a synovial fluid whose function is to dissipate the enormous tensions and to prevent this tension to be transmitted to the bone. Due to repeated minor trauma, these bursae can become inflamed.

Symptoms

There are many bursae that surround the knee joint, and the most often affected is prepatellar bursitis. Inflammation appears in front of the patella with mild pain that increases when you stand on it and perform forced flexion of the knee. It usually occurs in people whose profession (domestic workers) requires to spend long periods of time in a kneeling position.

The most common pes anserine bursitis appears on the inside of the knee, causing pain that increases when going up and down stairs. Inflammation may not be very obvious.Pes anserine bursitis appears in middle-aged women or overweight elderly with arthritis. Iliotibial bursitis, iliotibial band syndrome or runner's knee appears more frequently in athletes, especially runners. It manifests as pain on the outside of the knee.

Causes

The most frequent reason are repeated injuries that occur at work or in sports. It can also be due to infections and rheumatic disorders.

Treatment

Knee bursitis requires antiinflammatory treatment, rest and in some cases pressure bandage. When despite treatment bursitis do not solve a syringe and / or infiltration with corticosteroids can be used. The surgery is usually performed only rarely, in very rebellious and infected bursitis. The surgery removes the bursa.

Pes anserine bursitis can benefit from anti-inflammatory that can be taken orally, but sometimes are more effective when they are administered by local infiltration of anesthetic with corticosteroids.

In the knee there are several bags but there are three are the most important: prerotuliana, the patella and the anserine bursa.

The clinical manifestation depends on the inflamed bursa but all experience pain and inflammation. The diagnosis is by examination and additional tests using imaging.
